No Food = No Energy. The Cruel Effects Of Anorexia Nervosa

The number of teenagers suffering from Anorexia continues to increase with time, and besides blaming ourselves for creating a culture where thin is in vogue, there is nothing else that can be done. It does not suddenly afflict a teenager suffering from Anorexia, but is a gradual suffering related to several external factors. These factors cause a teen to believe that he/she is not worthy and sooner or later leads to anorexia. The media has played a major role in leading teenager to suffer from anorexia, by simply portraying people as thin and selling them to the audience as beautiful. This deludes young growing teenagers in to believing this is true and they are psychologically brainwashed and open arms to the devastating disease of anorexia unknowingly.

Most people tend to be on the chubby side during their younger years, hence teenagers compare the plumper images of themselves with the images that are seen on TV, and fashion magazines and are battered with the idea that they are fat. This makes them feel that they have a big deficiency and makes it more difficult for them to accept themselves as they are. Their self-image is low; their confidence at zero and the only solace they take is in being bone thin. The images portrayed to them are supposedly perfect, and society needs to stop this wrong notion being spread amongst the youth. The models in magazines and on fashion television channels have been tailored by computer programs to look thin. This is the reason that most of the vulnerable teenagers believe that thin is a requirement to be popular, when in fact the models themselves are not as they look in the magazines. All of this ultimately causes teenagers to endanger their health by suffering from eating disorders like anorexia.

Friends and the environment of school, colleges, etc have also had an effect on anorexia sufferers. They are victimized at school in the form of teasing, insults etc that hint at the weight, which affects the victim of anorexia to a higher degree. The victim continually thinks of these comments that are passed and has a harder time coping up with his/her problems. It is quite disheartening to know that such comments by friends can play a role in further escalating the degree of suffering. Therefore, it is vital that the family of an anorexia sufferer be supportive at all times and explains the gravity of the disease to their friends.

The first step in treating a person suffering from Anorexia is to contact a mental health professional who specializes in anorexia since the approach to be taken is different.
